Pip’s entire view of woman and how to treat them had been instilled in him by his mother. Though she hadn’t been with him very long, she’d taught him a lifetime’s worth. And he would recall her lessons with nothing but fondness.

For all intents and purposes, it had in fact been an accident. Pip was only six years old and he and his group of friends, both boys and girls, were playing a simple game of tag. He was it and was chasing one of the slower girls Caroline in order to tag her. Caroline had twin pigtails long and easy to grab.

So he had. He’d caught up to her and yanked on her hair, shouting, “You’re it!”

Needless to say, Caroline’s parents called the school earning Pip lunchtimes alone and a call to his own mother. He came back from school, afraid his mother would yell at him.

She did no such thing. She always made time for her son, who was the most precious thing to her, but Lina’s recurring battle with cancer left her exhausted most of the time. She told Pip to put his schoolbag down and come to her. The emerald eyed little boy stood in front of his mother, looking at the floor.

Pip was too heavy for Lina to pick up any longer so she pulled him forward and encouraged him to sit on her lap. He looked away from her, but she forced his green eyes to meet hers.

"I heard you pulled Caroline’s hair," his mother said gently.

Pip nodded his head ashamed.

"Why did you do that Pip?"

"It was an accident!" Pip cried, "We were playing, and I wanted to tag her. Her hair was the first thing I touched so…"

Lina sighed softly. She’d had a feeling it was an accident. Her son didn’t make a habit of bullying anyone, boys or girls in his class. However, Lina was well aware that some you men did to it deliberately. She pulled her son closer to her and kissed his forehead.

"I’m not mad at you, darling."

Green eyes looked up at her confused. “You’re not?”

"No. But you do need to be careful around girls, my love. Pip, women are like flowers. When allowed to and supported, they flourish and bloom brilliantly. But if they are put in the shadows, if they are stepped on or ignored…they hurt. You’re gentle with flowers. Be that way with girls Pip. Always. Even when you’re all grown up and fall in love."

Her son pulled a face at the mention of falling in love. She chuckled, amused how he was too young to want a girl as anything more as a friend. Suddenly her son’s small hands were in her hair. Instead of tugging, he was running his fingers through it softly and gently. He bluntly asked, “Are you a flower too Mama?”

"Yes," Lina said smiling. ‘A withering one,’ she silently added. Her eyes burned with tears she couldn’t shed. Her son didn’t realize the implications of her illness. He had no idea what cancer was and she didn’t want him to. She only ever wanted him to be happy.

She gently scooted him off her lap and stood up. She took his small hand in hers and led him to the kitchen. “Let’s get you something to eat, my love.”

"Oui, Mama fleur."

Pip smiled as he was pulled from slumber. He did miss his mother. Everyday there was something he wanted to share with her. Most of all, he wished he could tell her that he’d finally met the girl of his dreams.

His flower. His cutie. His English rose. His Mignonette.

He kept his mother’s lessons in mind, and they served him well. He always treated Seras like she was the most important thing to him, because she was. He encouraged her to bloom but was always there to support her when she preferred not to. He brought her sunlight through his very being though she could not walk in it directly anymore.

And as for pulling her short silky blonde hair? It never happened.

Pip was the one with long hair in the relationship. And Seras was quite fond of pulling at it or playing with it during their more intimate moments.

It didn’t bother Pip any. He would accept her attentions with a brilliant smile.
